(AP) — Garrett Richards pitched seven effective innings, and the Los Angeles Angels parlayed three errors and another mammoth home run by Mark Trumbo into five early runs against Derek Holland to beat the Texas Rangers 8-3 last night. The Rangers' fifth loss in six games, coupled with Oakland's 2-1 victory against Houston, put Texas 1 1-2 games behind the Athletics in the AL West race. Richards allowed two runs — one earned — and six hits while striking out five and walking one.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Brandon McCarthy pitched eight strong innings and Paul Goldschmidt had three hits, including a triple, to lift the Diamondbacks to a 2-1 win over the San Francisco Giants last night. McCarthy gave up one run and six hits while striking out six. Matt Cain allowed eight hits and two runs in 6 1-3 innings.
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Rookie Jedd Gyorko hit a go-ahead homer leading off the eighth inning to give the San Diego Padres a 2-1 win over the Colorado Rockies last night. Gyorko's shot off Matt Belisle came right after the Rockies tied the game at 1 in the eighth inning on a San Diego error. Luke Gregerson got the win and Huston Street picked up his 28th save by getting the final three outs.
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Dan Straily pitched seven scoreless innings to help the Oakland Athletics edge the Houston Astros 2-1 yesterday. Yoenis Cespedes and Jed Lowrie homered as the A's won for the seventh time in nine games to remain on top of the AL West. Straily allowed two hits, struck out seven and walked one. Sean Doolittle got four outs for his first save in four chances, completing the five-hitter.
CARSON, Calif. (AP) — Edson Buddle scored in the 75th minute and the Colorado Rapids beat the short-handed Los Angeles Galaxy 1-0 last night. Buddle rocketed a shot to the upper-left corner after Vicente Sanchez stripped Galaxy defender Todd Dunivant of the ball on Los Angeles' left wing. The Galaxy lost at home for the first time since early May, dropping from second to third in the West.
