SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The biggest mental health unit in California's prison system for high security inmates remains in disarray, according to a court-appointed investigator and others familiar with the facility. A court-appointed "special master" says that the departure of psychiatrists who were fired or quit has left Salinas Valley State Prison in Soledad seriously understaffed. The dispute arises out of a 32-year-old class action lawsuit filed by inmates.
HONOLULU (AP) — A United Airlines flight from Honolulu to San Francisco was abruptly canceled after passengers reported seeing smoke from an engine. The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported yesterday that Flight 724 had just started going down the runway Friday afternoon in Honolulu when a loud bang was heard. Passengers say they then saw smoke. All 325 safely exited the plane.
HALF MOON BAY, Calif. (AP) — A judge says an oceanfront property owner may continue to block public access to a Northern California beach. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the San Mateo County Superior Court judge ruled last week that billionaire Vinod Khosla may block the only road to Martins Beach south of Half Moon Bay. The decision is the latest blow in a years-long battle between beach lovers and Khosla.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Marcia Wallace, the voice of Edna Krabappel on "The Simpsons," has died. "Simpsons" executive producer Al Jean said in a statement yesterday that her death is a terrible loss. He says her character, who teaches Bart Simpson, would be retired from the show. The longtime TV actress' credits include "The Bob Newhart Show."
