EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) — Shawne Williams has signed with the Los Angeles Lakers, reuniting the journeyman forward with coach Mike D'Antoni. The Lakers announced the deal yesterday for Williams, a six-year NBA veteran. Williams was a first-round pick out of Memphis by the Indiana Pacers in 2006. He also suited up for Dallas, New York and New Jersey before spending last season out of the NBA.
NEW YORK (AP) — The San Francisco 49ers top the AP Pro32 power rankings as the NFL begins its 2013 season. Losers in the Super Bowl last February to Baltimore, the 49ers earned nine first-place votes and 379 points Tuesday from a nationwide panel of 12 AP Pro32 members. At the bottom are the Oakland Raiders with a mere 20 points. Oakland was 32nd on eight ballots.
BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) — California safety Avery Sebastian will undergo surgery on his right Achilles tendon tomorrow and miss the rest of the season. Avery was injured in the first half of the Golden Bears' season-opening 44-30 loss to Northwestern on Saturday. The junior defensive back, who missed a large chunk of training camp with a concussion, had 11 tackles.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — An international jury has levied the harshest penalties in the 162-year history of the America's Cup, docking defending champion Oracle Team USA two points in the finals against Emirates Team Zealand and expelling a key sailor. The penalties announced against the syndicate Tuesday are for illegally modifying prototype boats in warmup regattas last year and earlier this year. Oracle Team USA also was fined $250,000. The series begins Saturday on San Francisco Bay.
