LOS ANGELES (AP) — Former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has a new job. He'll be a senior adviser for Herbalife. The nutritional products company says Villaraigosa will counsel its board and chairman on strategic business development and global community outreach. The LA Times says Herbalife has been criticized by Latino civil rights group about the way it markets its distributorships.
FONTANA, Calif. (AP) — A big-rig crashed into an under-construction overpass on Interstate 10 in Fontana, shutting down the entire westbound side during evening rush hour. The bridge is about 50 miles east of Los Angeles. CHP officers say westbound traffic was backed up for miles afterward. All lanes were open again about four hours later.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Prosecutors say a dozen employees from four Southern California school districts have pleaded not guilty to charges that they stole and resold thousands of textbooks. The indictment unsealed yesterday said that book buyer and seller Corey Frederick of Doorkeeper Textz in Long Beach paid the employees between $600 and $47,000 per person for stolen texts, then resold them. The books were taken from Los Angeles Unified schools and nearby districts in Inglewood, Lynwood and Bellflower.
MIAMI (AP) — Tropical Storm Lorena has re-formed farther north in the eastern Pacific, leading to storm warnings for parts of the Mexico coast. The U.S. Hurricane Center in Miami said last night that Lorena is expected to bring 3 to 5 inches of rain to the southwest coast of Mexico and the southern portion of the Baja California peninsula.
