ARROWHEAD SPRINGS, Calif. (AP) — A hiker who has been missing in the San Bernardino National Forest for five days has been rescued. The San Bernardino County Sheriff's department says 55-year-old Rodney Trumbo of Redlands was found Sunday afternoon after a helicopter crew spotted a fire that he started.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Efforts by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department to reduce jail overcrowding have largely failed to reduce the jail population. The Los Angeles Times reports that inmates eligible for home confinement claimed they were homeless and inmates have also proven reluctant to volunteer to be released to a work in a supervised job.
BANNING, Calif. (AP) — A Banning police officer shot and killed a man during a confrontation at a hotel after the man allegedly brandished a handgun. Police tell The Desert Sun that the officer was called to the hotel on a report of a man knocking on doors looking for a woman early yesterday morning. The officer fired his weapon during a scuffle with the man in an elevator.
CHULA VISTA, Calif. (AP) — Near the U.S.-Mexican border, Chula Vista police say they found about 5,000 pounds of marijuana inside a truck after they pulled over the 19-year-old driver for running a red light. Police searched the truck before impounding it because officers determined that the 19-year-old didn't have a driver's license. It's unclear where the marijuana came from.
