SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The brother of a Los Angeles Dodgers fan who was stabbed to death in San Francisco after the team played the San Francisco Giants says he swung a chair at the suspect during a fight. Robert Preece tells KGO-TV that he was protecting his brother after another group of people came up behind them. Preece's brother, Jonathan Denver, was killed on Sept. 25. Police have said Denver's group, many wearing Dodgers garb, got into a shouting match over the Dodgers with the suspect, Michael Montgomery.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Much of Southern California is under a red-flag alert for high winds and hot, dry weather conditions that have dangerously raised the threat of wildfire. Winds in some high-desert areas and mountain passes had reached 30 to 40 miles per hour by early morning.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Authorities say high winds are pushing smoke from a small wildfire in Northern California into San Francisco and surrounding areas. The fire near Lake Berryessa in Napa County had burned 500 acres and was 75 percent contained as of this morning, a day after it began.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Some fans of "Breaking Bad," the AMC series which concluded Sunday night, were inspired to place an obituary for character Walter White in the Albuquerque Journal. The notice is headlined "White, Walter" and includes a photo of Bryan Cranston, the actor who played the chemistry teacher turned drug kingpin. The obituary says the 52-year-old "founded a meth manufacturing empire" and that he died "after a long battle with lung cancer and a gunshot wound."
