THERMAL, Calif. (AP) — Federal officials say a high level of arsenic has been found in the water at a Riverside County mobile home park. The Press-Enterprise reports sampling at D&D Mobile Home Park on the Torres Martinez Desert Cahuilla Indian Reservation near Thermal shows arsenic at almost six times the maximum contamination level set by regulators. The EPA says the penalty for not complying with the terms of the order can be up to $37,500 per day.
SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) — Seventeen people are in custody and almost 2,000 pot plants have been seized in a sweep of San Bernardino County. The LA Times reports 110 pounds of processed marijuana was confiscated when six warrants were served yesterday in Landers and Yucca Valley. Investigators say at one site, 378 plants up to 5 feet tall were growing on a one-and-a-half acre plot.
CASTAIC, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say a burned body found near Castaic Lake isn't a missing college student but the victim of an unrelated murder. LA County Sheriff's Capt. Mike Parker says the remains found last week are not those of 19-year-old Bryce Laspisa. Parker says they belong to Lamondre Miles, a Los Angeles man killed in Hawthorne on Sept. 3. Investigators believe his body was dumped and burned a day later. Three people have been arrested.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Billy Joel and Carlos Santana are among four musicians who will receive this year's Kennedy Center Honors, along with actress Shirley MacLaine. The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts announced the selections Thursday. The honorees also include jazz artist Herbie Hancock and opera star Martina Arroyo.
