SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — One of the California Legislature's most liberal members is joining one of its most conservative in opposition to a federal anti-terrorism law. Democratic Sen. Mark Leno of San Francisco and Republican Assemblyman Tim Donnelly of Twin Peaks both support a bill that would prohibit state agencies from enforcing a federal law allowing for indefinite detainment.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Prosecutors have charged a 26-year-old man with murder in the death of a woman who fell from a car onto a crowded Los Angeles freeway and was hit by several other vehicles. Authorities say Ricardo Jimenez was dating Maria Jimenez, but would not comment further on their relationship. Ricardo Jimenez surrendered to authorities over the weekend.
PINOLE, Calif. (AP) — A 25-year-old Northern California man has been charged with murder in the butcher-knife slayings of his grandmother and uncle. The Contra Costa Times reports that Jeffrey Flores of Pinole is scheduled to be arraigned tomorrow. Prosecutors say he suffers from mental health problems.
FRESNO, Calif. (AP) — Twenty-eight farmworkers who were buried in a mass grave after their plane crashed en route to Mexico in 1948 now have a gravestone with their names on it. Their anonymous burial led Woody Guthrie to write a protest poem that was sung over the years by musicians including Joan Baez and Bob Dylan. The granite memorial was unveiled yesterday at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in Fresno.
