LOS ANGELES (AP) — Sheriff's officials say a suspect has been killed in a deputy-involved shooting in East Los Angeles. Deputy Jeff Gordon says the shooting happened around 1:30 this morning just north of City Terrace Park. The suspect, a man, was pronounced dead at the scene. No deputies were injured.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California lawmakers are approving a plan to hand out condoms in adult prisons, despite the state's ban on having sex behind bars. The Senate approved the bill yesterday and sent it to the Assembly. Democratic Sen. Rod Wright of Los Angeles says when inmates contract diseases, the state is on the hook for their medical bills. He says "a condom is cheaper than treating the disease after they get it."
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Supporters of a California ballot measure that softened the nation's toughest three-strikes law say some 1,000 prisoners have had their life terms significantly reduced and are out of prison. A new report released by supporters of Prop 36 show that about 2 percent of those released have since been charged with new crimes. That compares with a 16 percent recidivism rate for all California inmates released from prison, according to the report by Stanford's Three Strikes Project and the NAACP Legal Defense Fund.

The bill was drafted in response to a Los Angeles Times investigation regarding deaths from prescription drug overdoses. The newspaper reported that it found a lack of oversight by the medical board regarding overdoses cases.
