LOS ANGELES (AP) — The FBI says a former LA County reserve sheriff's deputy has been arrested on suspicion of stealing a diamond worth up to $1 million. The LA Times says Billy Lulo was arrested yesterday and booked for mail fraud. The Times says Lulo, who owns a Los Angeles jewelry store, was given a 22-carat diamond to sell for a Texas couple. The FBI says Lulo was later asked to return the diamond when it wasn't sold but allegedly sent the couple an empty package.
VISTA, Calif. (AP) — A San Diego County man has been arrested on suspicion of killing a woman whose body was found wrapped in plastic near a trash bin. U-T San Diego says Kirk Stapleton of Vista was arrested yesterday and remains in jail. Authorities say Stapleton was in a romantic relationship with Juanita Kawash, who died from blunt force trauma. She was found dead Aug. 19.
SAN DIEGO (AP) — A Republican city councilman says he's running for San Diego mayor in a special election to replace Bob Filner, who resigned amid allegations that he sexually harassed women. Kevin Faulconer launched his bid yesterday, promising to restore trust in a scandal-plagued City Hall. Republican Carl DeMaio said Tuesday that he will sit out the Nov. 19 special election and instead run for Congress.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Landlords of the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum have granted USC control over the historic arena for the next century. The LA Times says the California Science Center yesterday gave final approval to a 99-year lease. USC, which uses the stadium for football games, will pay the state $1 million or more in annual rent and will spend up to $100 million on improvements.
