The Sacramento Bee reports the city owes CalPERS $17 million in overdue payments. Last week the San Bernardino City Council adopted a tentative plan to deal with all its creditors, including CalPERS.
SAN DIEGO (AP) — A woman who pleaded guilty to her involvement in the death of a San Diego police officer in a shootout has been sentenced to over 25 years in prison. U-T San Diego reports that Melissa Ortiz was not accused of firing the fatal shot, but prosecutors said Melissa Ortiz aided and abetted the killing.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — No more squid fishing off Southern California until next March. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife is closing the commercial fishery for market squid, saying the season's harvest limit will be reached today. The department tracks daily catches with the help of squid fishermen and seafood processors, and sets the limit to prevent overfishing.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — A judge has dismissed actress Nicollette Sheridan's long-running lawsuit against ABC over her firing from the hit series "Desperate Housewives." The judge ruled today that Sheridan's case couldn't proceed because the actress should have exhausted her claims to a labor commissioner before pursuing a trial.
