REDDING, Calif. (AP) — Fire crews have increased containment of a wildfire that destroyed nearly 70 homes in rural Northern California. Officials say the Clover Fire in Shasta County was 80 percent contained this morning. There was no change in the tally of homes destroyed, which nearly doubled to 68 yesterday. The fire has burned 12 ½ square miles. Full containment is expected by Sunday.
MADERA, Calif. (AP) — The lawyer for an agricultural employer in central California is denying allegations that his client raped a farmworker. The attorney for Parmjit Singh Bassi said today that his client paid for sex with the farmworker and did not rape her. Bassi's business is Lucky Farms in Chowchilla. Lawyers for the alleged victim said in a lawsuit filed yesterday that she was raped on her first day on the job and threatened with another assault if she told anyone. The woman said she was fired after she reported the rape to police.
SAN DIEGO (AP) — A research firm says home prices in the San Francisco Bay area began to cool off last month after a torrid run. DataQuick said today that the median sales price for new and existing houses and condos last month was $540,000, down by $22,000 from July. The median was still up a whopping 32 percent from August 2012.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Basketball star Lamar Odom has been charged with misdemeanor DUI, nearly two weeks after his Mercedes-Benz was pulled over on a Southern California freeway. The LA city attorney's office said today that the charges stem from Odom's Aug. 30 arrest in the San Fernando Valley. The husband of reality TV star Khloe Kardashian was taken into custody after a sobriety test.
