Losers in the Super Bowl last February to Baltimore, the 49ers earned nine first-place votes and 379 points today from a nationwide panel of 12 AP Pro32 members who cover the league. At the bottom are the Oakland Raiders with a mere 20 points.
STANFORD, Calif. (AP) — After spending the first week of the season on the sidelines, No. 5 Stanford is set to kick off its season at home against San Jose State on Saturday night. Stanford coach David Shaw spent the first weekend of college football finishing training camp and glancing at games while playing with his children.
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — The Oakland Athletics have recalled left-hander Tommy Milone from Class A Stockton and righty Evan Scribner from Triple-A Sacramento. Oakland also purchased the contract of righty Pat Neshek from Sacramento today to add pitching depth for the September stretch run.
METAIRIE, La. (AP) — The New Orleans Saints have brought back receiver Robert Meachem, shortly after his release by the San Diego Chargers. The Saints announced that Meachem has been signed to a one-year contract. He was the Saints' first-round draft choice in 2007 and left for San Diego as a free agent last season.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — An international jury has levied the harshest penalties in the 162-year history of the America's Cup, docking defending champion Oracle Team USA two points in the finals against Emirates Team Zealand and expelling a key sailor. The penalties announced against the syndicate today are for illegally modifying prototype boats in warmup regattas last year and earlier this year.
