Woman, 90, dies, 3 injured in Orange County fire

YORBA LINDA, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say a 90-year-old woman has died and her son and two deputies who tried to rescue her were injured in a Southern California house fire.

The Orange County Register (http://bit.ly/1jW5E2S ) reports the two deputies were first to respond to the Tuesday fire in Yorba Linda.

County fire Capt. Steve Concialdi (cahn-see-AHL'-dee) says the deputies and the woman's 56-year-old son tried twice to make it to an upstairs bedroom to rescue the woman but couldn't make it through the heat and thick smoke.

Authorities say when firefighters arrived they used masks and protective gear to reach the woman, Katheryn Carras, who was on the bedroom floor. She was taken to a hospital and was declared dead a few hours later.

The son and deputies were hospitalized for minor smoke inhalation.
