5 arrested in Santa Cruz boy's 2012 killing

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (AP) — Police in Santa Cruz have arrested five teenage gang members in the drive-by shooting of a 12-year-old boy last year.

The Santa Cruz Sentinel reported Monday (http://bit.ly/1cn2iib) that Joey Mendoza was on his way to his home in the Lower Ocean neighborhood on Aug. 8, 2012, when 19-year-old Andrew Carrera and four other gang members confronted him.

Police told the newspaper that during the confrontation, Mendoza was shot twice in the back and died on the scene.

The names of four suspects are being withheld by the authorities because they are minors.

Two of the suspects are 17 and were also in custody in separate cases; two others are 15 and were living in groups in Exeter and Placerville.
