SACRAMENTO, Calif. — California's unemployment rate continues to decline after a temporary increase over the summer. The jobless rate for November was 8.5 percent, down two-tenths of a percentage point from the previous month. TONSILLECTOMY-BRAIN DEAD GIRL

OAKLAND — The mother of a 13-year-old Northern California girl declared brain dead after a routine tonsillectomy says her daughter had expressed fears she wouldn't wake up after the surgery. SENT: 130 words.

BIG SUR FIRE

BIG SUR, Calif. — Containment lines have been carved around nearly 90 percent of the area burned by a wildfire that destroyed 14 homes.
