NTSB probes 'close' call between planes at Newark

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — A pilot of a departing plane at Newark Liberty Airport can be heard telling air traffic controllers on a recording that an arriving plane passed "real close" to him.

The incident occurred Thursday afternoon. An ExpressJet flight was departing for Memphis on a northbound runway as a United flight from San Francisco was approaching to land on an east-west runway.

An air traffic controller is heard on a recording on www.LiveATC.net telling the incoming plane to climb back up. The departing pilot's plane tells the tower he will "put the nose down" on takeoff. After he clears the runway, he tells the tower the other plane was "real close."

It's not clear yet how close the planes came to each other. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating.
