LA detective knocked down by chair thrown in court

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Authorities say a Los Angeles police detective was treated for injuries after a murder suspect threw a chair in court that hit her in the head and knocked her down.

The Sheriff's Department said Jesus Mendez had just entered the downtown courtroom Wednesday when he grabbed the chair and tossed it about 15 feet. It hit the detective and also grazed a prosecutor.

A court deputy took Mendez to the floor and held him until help arrived and Mendez was returned to jail.

The detective was treated at a hospital and is in good condition.

Sheriff's officials say Mendez was in court in civilian clothes without handcuffs to avoid prejudicing the jury. He had not previously been hostile in court.

He's charged with fatally shooting a man during a robbery.
